62 days down, 38 to go. It doesn't get easier really, 10,000 steps every day, is 10,000 steps. Well trucking up hill may have gotten a bit easier. Had a few really hot days which made my walks more difficult. I actually prefer walking in the rain opposed to sweltering heat.
Since my last post, I have racked up another 221,861 steps bringing my total to 809,392 steps. I'm averaging around 5.5 to 6.5 miles per day. Most days regardless of how many steps I have accumulated throughout the day, I set out to walk 10,000 or in one shot which takes me about 50 to 60 minutes. I walk at full throttle trying to get my heart rate going. From time to time I may jog for half a mile or so to again get my heart pumping.
Just as a reminder or for those new to the blog, below I will post some of the benefits of walking daily. I hope you will join me and commit to walking one million steps in 100 days or less.
Health benefits of walking
You carry your own body weight when you walk. This is known as weight-bearing exercise. Some of the benefits include:
- increased cardiovascular and pulmonary (heart and lung) fitness
- reduced risk of heart disease and stroke
- improved management of conditions such as hypertension (high blood pressure), high cholesterol, joint and muscular pain or stiffness, and diabetes
- stronger bones and improved balance
- increased muscle strength and endurance
- reduced body fat.
Walking for 30 minutes a day
To get the health benefits, try to walk for at least 30 minutes as briskly as you can on most days of the week. ‘Brisk’ means that you can still talk but not sing, and you may be puffing slightly. Moderate activities such as walking pose little health risk but, if you have a medical condition, check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program of physical activity.
