Keep Calm and Get Active!
Hey everyone. As promised I am trying to post a bit more often. With only three days left of my reaching my 100 day goal I am feeling a tad anxious. I’m not over thinking this as it is more than likely due to the challenge coming to an end. Actually the real challenge to me will come after. I think a lot of people would end up taking a long break feeling it deserving. I on the other hand am leaning more towards going for another million steps. Sounds like a healthy plan.
You know in many of my posts I tell of the benefits of this and that in hopes of inspiring others to jump in. That’s basically what this blog and me sharing my personal experiences is all about. This post I wanna take a slightly different approach. I want to share some information that many THINK they already know and that many are clueless about. The effects of the LACK of Exercising. Yea I am NOT the life of the party as I’ve been told. The bearers of bad news or rather TRUTH BEARERS are rarely invited to the party if ever. Well here comes a bit of raw truth.
Lack of exercise is a major cause of chronic diseases. Chronic diseases are major killers in the modern era. Physical inactivity is a primary cause of most chronic diseases. There is historical evidence showing physical inactivity is detrimental to health and normal organ functional capacities; cause vs. treatment; physical activity and inactivity mechanisms differ; gene-environment interaction [including aerobic training adaptations, personalized medicine, and co-twin physical activity]; and specificity of adaptations to type of training. Physical activity/exercise is examined as primary prevention against 35 chronic conditions [Accelerated biological aging/premature death, low cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max), sarcopenia, metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin resistance, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, coronary heart disease, peripheral artery disease, hypertension, stroke, congestive heart failure, endothelial dysfunction, arterial dyslipidemia, hemostasis, deep vein thrombosis, cognitive dysfunction, depression and anxiety, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, balance, bone fracture/falls, rheumatoid arthritis, colon cancer, breast cancer, endometrial cancer, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, polycystic ovary syndrome, erectile dysfunction, pain, diverticulitis, constipation, and gallbladder diseases]. There are also clinical consequences of inactive childhood/adolescence. In summary, the body rapidly maladapts to insufficient physical activity, and if continued, results in substantial decreases in both total and quality years of life. Taken together, conclusive evidence exists that physical inactivity is one important cause of most chronic diseases. In addition, physical activity primarily prevents, or delays, chronic diseases, implying that chronic disease need not be an inevitable outcome during life. There’s a lot to digest here and so much to ponder. Considering all of the above is null and void by simply implementing 30 minutes of exercise 5 days per week paired with eating healthy foods, one would think it’s a no brainer. Think again. Most people I have encountered could care less. I get it, I was there once not long ago. But I am grateful I woke up and realized just how precious life is. All I can do is focus on myself, work on myself and hope my actions will in turn inspire others to not wait until they are in their 50’s to start. Health is the true wealth. Don’t allow yourself to be fooled into thinking otherwise. Thank you for reading.
